About ACT CISM
WHO WE ARE A not-for-profit Community Association in the Canberra region that provides information, referrals, and support in critical incident stress management and related fields. Our Association has a special interest in pre-crisis preparation: including mental health promotion in stress, critical incident stress and trauma. CRITICAL INCIDENT SUPPORT ACT CISM conducts a 24/7 Crisis Employee Assistance Service. This is provided free to community organisations and very small business in our region. The ACT CISM Team consists of volunteer mental health professionals and peer supporters. The Team provides on scene support and up to three sessions of counselling with a registered psychologist or Social Worker. EDUCATION AND TRAINING The ACT Critical Incident Stress Management Information Service Inc. supplies speakers for community meetings and other events. Previously presented topics include Stress Management, Critical Incident Stress Management, Avoiding Burnout, Peer Support, Vicarious Trauma, Support Communication, Dealing with Aggression. There are no costs involved in short community seminars. The Association also has qualified workplace trainers available to conduct training - you will find details of upcoming courses and seminars here. The Association is able to provide courses to organisations on a fee-for-service basis. Further details are available from the Service please email us or telephone 02 62918009.
LIBRARY SERVICE The Service maintains a research library on Critical Incidents, Peer Support, trauma recovery, pastoral care, and Critical Incident Stress Management. The Library is located at Richardson Support House, 38 May Gibbs Close, Richardson ACT 2905. You are welcome to read and relax, browse, or photocopy material* weekdays 10am to 2pm. *Some material can be copied for research purposes free-of-charge and mailed to you, NB copyright regulations apply. SUPPORT for Peer Supporters, Mental Health Professionals, and others. Our newsletter, on-line journal, and library provide articles to provide assistance to those working in trauma support or in difficult environments. Our seminar program is designed to provide professional development and networking opportunities as well. Peer Support Teams are welcome to contact our duty officer for 24/7 telephone support.
